Pros And Cons Of Writing A Restaurant Review

The popularity of online review sites like Yelp and OpenTable allow you, the customer, to share your shopping/dining experience with other consumers. Through these sites, you can let them know what places you like and what places you didn’t like in order to help them make a better decision.

Some people enjoy leaving reviews on review sites while others aren’t sure if it’s worth it. The following are the pros and cons of writing restaurant reviews to help you better decide if you want to indulge.

Pro: You’re helping other consumers.

The biggest pro for writing restaurant reviews is that you’re helping other consumers learn where to spend their money and where not to waste their money. This can be extremely helpful to people who are new to the area or who simply cannot make up their mind on where to eat.

Con: There are so many different review sites.

If there were one restaurant review site, it wouldn’t be such a big deal, but there are many restaurant review sites, and this could overwhelm you. You will need to decide if you want to post just to one site or to a variety of sites, and no matter which option you decide, you’ll still have to choose which review sites you want to use.

Pro: It can resolve issues.

If you wrote a negative online review for a restaurant, it’s possible that the restaurant will see the review and reach out to you in order to make it right. You may simply get an apology (which, let’s face it, goes a long way) or you may even receive a gift card or incentive as part of the restaurant’s apology to you.

Con: It’s time consuming.

Writing a one-sentence review is a waste of time and doesn’t provide valuable information to other consumers. This means that you’ll want to write a thorough review that explains details about your trip and what made it so special or so bad. Because of this, you may find yourself spending a great deal of time signing up for the review sites and writing the reviews, so you’ll have to decide if this is worth it.

Pro: You can earn perks.

If you write a positive review for a restaurant, they may provide you with some type of perk as a thank you for your review. The restaurant may reach out to you and offer you a coupon, special promotion, exclusive deal or even a gift card as a thank you for taking the time to tell the world how wonderful their restaurant is.

Along with the individual restaurants, some online review sites may provide you with perks for being a member. Yelp as the Elite Squad, which is comprised of the most active Yelp reviewers. These individuals are rewarded with special discounts at local restaurants or exclusive parties for their continuing use of the site. Other sites offer similar perks, so if you want to write reviews, you may want to check out the perks.

Con: You may get backlash.

If you write a negative review about a place that has thousands of positive reviews, it may earn you some backlash from other consumers or even the company itself. Be prepared to receive comments on your reviews from others, both agreeing with you and disagreeing with you.
